History
HOW WE ARRIVED HERE
The Lord’s timing and ways are perfect. In 2004 the Barret family traveled to Saltillo Mexico and God began to give us hearts of compassion for the poor and lost. The last day we were leaving Saltillo many tears were shed because we were so overwhelmed with God’s love for these humble, precious people. Two years later as Christmas 2006 approached, our youngest daughter Libby (age 8 at the time) gave Monica and I a Christmas card that she had written at school. It stated, “Dear Mom, I feel this Christmas we should be missionaries and help the poor. Jesus keeps pushing me to tell you. Merry Christmas!” From this little one being sensitive to the Lord, God opened up clearly His will for Monica to go to Mozambique Africa. The Lord quickly led Monica to feel this was for His good purposes. It was a little over a month later that Monica was in the sky headed for Mozambique Africa, one of the poorest nations in the world. The Lord opened every door - visa, shots, applications, packing for two weeks, and care for our children. All the while He also was giving us great peace and excitement in our hearts for this new opportunity He was opening up to us. Those 2 weeks in Africa in February of 2007 were powerful and life changing, for all 4 of us. Monica was able to visit two orphanages under the care of Iris Ministries in Pemba and then Maputo. Monica and the team loved, prayed and worshipped with these orphans and widows. The Word says God will not leave us orphans - He will come to us! The Spirit of the Lord there was so mighty and so beautiful and those children just drink Him in and rest in Jesus’ arms! The highlight of the trip for the whole team was the privilege of meeting Pastor Emmanuel Nnyanzi from Uganda. Emmanuel quickly became a dear friend and his love, compassion and inner strength are evidence in his wonderful connection to the vine - JESUS!
We continued our relationship with Pastor Emmy as time went forward. We were unsuccessful in obtaining a visa for him to visit us in America so we made plans in the fall of 2007 to visit him in March of 2008. Our entire family left on March 6, 2008 for a 10 day trip to Uganda. There our lives would be forever changed ……experiencing these 200 orphans up close and personal. We were moved by their faithfulness, their joy and their genuine love for our Lord Jesus. We traveled and preached at some of the rural churches and knew that the Lord was asking us to do a great work for Him. We returned home motivated to make a difference in this world. In May of 2008, Parental Care Ministries USA, a nonprofit corporation was established to spread the Father’s love wherever He leads.
CURRENT WORK
The work has just begun with Parental Care Ministries USA, yet the Lord has accomplished much in a short time. The effort in Parental Care School Mbarara Uganda, our first area of focus, has brought many improvements to the quality of life for this group of 200 orphans and their staff of 16 employees. We have collected donations for the orphans and local pastors of rural Uganda. Our accomplishments in 2008 have included a new 16 passenger van for the ministry, dormitories for the orphans, new classrooms for the school, a uniform for every orphan, school desks, and teaching bibles for the teachers and pastors. An even big blessing was a private donation for a banana plantation to help provide about 1/3 of the monthly food budget for the orphans. We have started an orphan sponsorship program and currently have 1/3 of the 200 orphans sponsored at $35 a month. The monthly funds help cover food, shelter, security and teacher salaries for all the orphans. Moreover, we give the Lord praise for the quick provision recently of a well to provide clean water for all the orphans. $16,000 was raised in the month of December 2008 alone for this purpose. Drilling began the second week of February in 2009 and we hit clean water on 2/15/09. The water is plentiful and has already been tested as safe by the local authorities and the children. Currently the focus of our building in 2009 is on building bath houses for the orphans, a new dorm for the boys, and 2 new classrooms and repairing the large trench that is cutting through the middle of our land.
Our other focus arm of the ministry is working with Pastor Emmy's 43 rural Ugandan pastors. We try to gather them from all over Uganda at least twice a year for conferences. We are assisting them with resources to help equip their churches to minister to local people. We look forward to further to helping equip them with a mobile evangelism unit (complete with truck, PA system and the Jesus film ) someday soon. The other focus of work regarding the pastors is the School of Ezra that Pastor Emmy and Reuben direct. Here they teach these young pastors many Biblical truths and motivate them to share God's Word with the reached and unreached in their particular areas. The school of Ezra currently meets at Mbarara Parental Care School when the children are on break.
FUTURE WORK
Parental Care Ministries has 3 goals to fulfill the work that God has called us to do:
P is for Provider. We are to provide for people whom God loves both spiritually and physically.
- Matthew 6:31 states “For I am your provider and I meet all your needs.” We are motivated to provide God's children with the basics of life: food, clothing, shelter as well as resources for an education.
C is for Comforter. Our goal is to comfort and encourage God’s children.
- 2 Cor 1:3-4 states for “For I am the Father who comforts you in all your afflictions." We are called to come alongside those around the world who need comfort, encouragement, and edification. We are to build up the Body of Christ.
M is for Must Proclaim. We must proclaim the Good News.
- Mark 13:10 states “and the Good News must be proclaimed to all the nations.” We desire to share the Good News that Jesus saves, heals and delivers.
We look forward to fulfilling these goals wherever the Lord leads us in our future ministry efforts. We see our mission as to meet the physical, educational, and spiritual needs of God’s children in order that they may be equipped to carry the “Good News” throughout the world.
